What could possibly be suspicious about this job listing to be a puppeteer’s apprentice?

Story

A legendary stage puppeteer has returned from an unexplained hiatus and is searching for a new apprentice. Does your team have what it takes to conquer his challenges? Be on your guard; things are not always what they seem…

What an incredible opportunity!  A legendary puppeteer needs an apprentice, but they do not want just anyone for the job; they need someone qualified. Challengers will be tested in mental and physical tests to see if they are a good fit. But wait, where has the puppeteer been, and why do they need any help? It almost seems as if they have been waiting for us all this time. For such a rare chance to work with them, perhaps it is best not to ask questions.

Puppeteer’s Workshop nicely puts challengers in the center of the stage. Puzzle Break has developed a wonderfully unique story that flips the script as more is revealed about this mysterious legend.

Scenic

The scene starts in a small but lovable space with intricate artwork surrounding the walls and a cute stage as the main focal point. The set is clean and high-quality, which is exactly what a legendary icon should have. Challengers can find unique display cases with appropriately strange items within. What’s going on with the puppeteer?

Moving to the following space, would be apprentices find a dark secret. There is a wonderful reveal and transition between the areas, although it is awkward to navigate back and forth between them. The set can be best described as ‘cute spooky’. It is a lighthearted take on a creepy set, but it is not scary. The contrast between the spaces is a unique treat that perfectly fits this storyworld.

All of the components in the game are high quality and have not shown any age. The wall art and set pieces are interesting to look at and are immersive. Everything in the workshop authentically belongs there.

Puzzles

The puzzles match the high bar set from the scenery. Puzzle Break does a great job maximizing the space with unique mechanics. Challengers will need to look and interact with everything they can. Although careful observation is needed, nothing is hidden in peculiar spots. There was only one moment that caused frustration as apprentices can have the solution in hand but may not be able solve the puzzle without confirmation to keep trying until they get it just right.

Puppeteer’s Workshop has many novel puzzles. Some uncommon mechanisms lead to satisfying solves that get everyone involved. In general, the puzzles are approachable, where one sets the stage amongst the rest. Some of the riddles contain seamless tech throughout that allows the space to evolve, whereas others utilize mechanical components. It is a satisfying and effective mix.

One puzzle in particular truly puts challengers right into the story. It makes apprentices question if they truly have the answer in hand, and leads to a very satisfying solve. A puzzle that pulls this off can really add to the immersion of a game.

Overall

Finding the entrance is the first riddle as there is only one sign tucked behind a tree. Look for the purple padlock and head up the (unavoidable) stairs to their spacious lobby.

The Puppeteer’s Workshop has an uncommon story that leads to a memorable experience. Similar to the Eventide Departure, careful observation is needed, but it is not taken as far and is more reasonable here. Puzzle Break has created a refined game that just makes sense and holds its own in the emerging Seattle market.
