Growing up, there were certain things every one of us was trained not to do – rules in our formative years that define our outlooks for a lifetime. Don’t break someone else’s toys. Don’t cheat to win. Don’t mix water and live wires. And for goodness sake, don’t play with the electrical outlets. But now, as adults, we have one simple question: “Why not?” We crave something new; something we can’t do without consequence in our repetitive day to day lives. Taboo puzzles are the perfect outlet (no pun intended) allowing us to safely break the rules and, even just for an hour, to live in a world where everything we know is wrong feels so right.

Shelter R pulls double duty to earn its spot in our Taboo Puzzles countdown, with not one but two epically uncomfortable moments. Brooklyn Escape Rooms finds the perfect key to unlock our wild sides, allowing us to act out the fantasies we’ve all had at one point or another in an escape game. And if once isn’t enough, Shelter R will set out again to smash all preconceived notions of just what kind of actions are acceptable within the realm of an Escape Game. Brooklyn Escape Rooms aims to be different in all their games, but Shelter R is a cut above the rest.

July 11, 2020 – Escape Authority takes racially intolerant comments very seriously, and as such, in light of those recently made by the owner this former award-winning venue, we can no longer support, recommend or endorse this game. As such, this award has been removed.
This is not a political issue, nor is it a matter of opinion. This is an issue of respect and human decency. We need to do better as a people. The time for that is now.
The Study
The Basement
(Sylmar, CA / Las Vegas, NV / Kansas City, MO)
The Basement has never shied away from pushing limits with their gameplay, but they have perhaps established the definitive Taboo moment in The Study. Of course we all reasonably understand that while playing an escape game, we are perfectly safe. “It’s only make-believe.” And guests trapped in Edward Tandy’s Study may just be repeating those words out loud, as their hands shake with anticipation of what they’re about to do. Simply put, this Taboo Puzzle creates the ultimate dare moment for groups, and for those who escape, nothing will ever be the same again.

With nearly 1,000 games played across the site, being picked as one of the best three in the country is a well-earned honor to truly be proud of!
With so many deserving games worthy of recognition, our goal is to ensure these Keys To Greatness awards are attainable to all – not just those with blockbuster budgets that might be otherwise out of reach. As such, it’s important to note that with just one exception, a given game can only win in a single category – but every game will still be qualified to win the coveted Keys To Greatness – Best Game award on June 2, 2019.
*Although the games I’ve personally designed are consistently very highly rated by both enthusiasts and newer players alike, I cannot in good conscience nominate an attraction I created. As such, those games and the venues that call them home have been intentionally omitted from consideration for any Keys To Greatness award.
