The built-in sense of timed urgency that comes with an escape game often leads itself to themes that follow a much more serious tone. Breaking out of jail; escaping a killer; life or death scenarios that create pulse pounding races against the clock – but sometimes the best fun is just having fun. Comedy Themed escape games are becoming more and more common, and the best of them will leave guests laughing until their sides hurt far more than any serial killer could cause with an hour of torture.

Galaxy Quest
(Los Angeles, CA)
Well-timed video correspondences aboard the spacecraft Pandorus introduce guests to their mission, and its main protagonist, Krylor. This nefarious bandit known the galaxy over can pull off just about anything – except speaking with a voice that might match his bold reputation. With an irreverent sense of humor similar in flavor to Guardians of the Galaxy, 60out sends guests on an inter-stellar mission where everything that can go wrong will, filled with equally parts excitement and comedy thanks to a storyworld that never takes itself too seriously. An easy contender to the title of best Story, Puzzles or Scenic, simply put none of 60out’s world-class offerings can even come close to the laughs Galaxy Quest will steal.

Submerged
(Atlanta, GA)
At first glance, Submerged, set aboard a distressed underwater research facility, takes itself very seriously. Until it doesn’t. Perhaps the biggest surprise to even be a comedy game is easily one of the funniest we’ve ever seen, thanks to DSH-3 Deep Sea Habitat’s warped, albeit overly persistent Artificial Intelligence. Doubling as a sort of hint system, DSH-3’s AI is, in truth, not very helpful at all. In fact, he’s programmed to share all of the most useless facts in the known universe, specifically in moments when guests face the most tense of situations dependent on their full focus and concentration. And while it’s highly likely focus and concentration are not things you’ll leave DSH-3 with, one thing is for certain: guests who survive Submerged will unquestionably have a nice day.

Captain Spoopy Bones
and the Magnificent Quest
for Some Other Pirate’s Treasure

With a title so long it quite literally falls off the side of its attraction poster, it should come as no surprise that guests who set sail with Captain Spoopy Bones on his Magnificent Quest for Some Other Pirate’s Treasure have charted a course for a very different kind of swashbuckling adventure. In fact, there’s just no other pirate-themed game out there like this one. Doldrick’s Escape Room created something so goofy and so stupid that it instantly becomes one of the rare instances that those words become glowing compliments. Trapped in the brig of a ship in the command of a very plastic skeleton, Captain Spoopy Bones and the Magnificent Quest for Some Other Pirates Treasure is full of jokes, surprises and yes, red herrings (and for once, we loved finding them!) It’s a uniquely comedic story from start to finish – but don’t worry – it won’t take long to tell; bout’a hour, maybe less.

With nearly 1,000 games played across the site, being picked as one of the best three in the country is a well-earned honor to truly be proud of!
With so many deserving games worthy of recognition, our goal is to ensure these Keys To Greatness awards are attainable to all – not just those with blockbuster budgets that might be otherwise out of reach. As such, it’s important to note that with just one exception, a given game can only win in a single category – but every game will still be qualified to win the coveted Keys To Greatness – Best Game award on June 2, 2019.
*Although the games I’ve personally designed are consistently very highly rated by both enthusiasts and newer players alike, I cannot in good conscience nominate an attraction I created. As such, those games and the venues that call them home have been intentionally omitted from consideration for any Keys To Greatness award.
