Escape Games, by their very nature, have always been about outside the box problem solving. Now, that very notion could never shine more brightly. In the face of global uncertainty, the industry has banded together to innovate and evolve, creating a whole new way to “escape reality,” with Remote Play from the comfort and safety of your own home. Because so many worthy contenders for the title of Best Remote Play have sprung up so quickly, and because for the first time, we’re rating on a world-wide scale, Escape Authority will award equal honors to venues in our home country of the USA, as well as Internationally. Our 2020 Keys To Greatness – Best Remote Play award will also include Top Five Remote Play honors, enabling us to recognize the impressive efforts so many venues have put into offering us all a little bit of fun during such a trying and stressful time.
Escape Authority is honored to announce our 2020 Keys To Greatness – Best Remote Play – International winners:
The Revenge of Tutanchamun
(Innsbruck, Austria)
Deep in an Egyptian tomb lies the final resting place of the great Tuanchamun. Undisturbed for a very long time, only the bravest – or most foolish- grave robbers would attempt to disrupt his eternal slumber. Thankfully only one poor soul must venture into the pyramid, assisted by a remote team of tomb raiders. This character driven adventure uses first person views, overhead cameras, appropriately eerie sounds, and intuitive puzzles to create an exciting adventure will a real sense of danger that unfolds like a classic movie where the viewers decide the ending.

The Steampunk Adventure
(Kaunas, Lithuania)
Giant gears. Steaming metal pipes. Enormous levers that activate hulking machinery. The Steampunk Adventure has everything that a player would want from this theme, and then some. Creative challenges utilize all sorts of mechanical devices in a grand scale exploration of a brilliant professors secret workshop. A game jam-packed with tech, some of which we’ve quite honestly never seen before, would undoubtedly be impressive in person but also translates exceptionally well to the remote play medium.

Casino Mortale
(Almere, The Netherlands)
With one of the most well developed storyworlds of any game we’ve played, Casino Mortale stands out as a unique and memorable narrative adventure. Beginning days before the actual attempted break in, remote accomplices are connected with the heist mastermind and the assistant who will be doing the grunt work on the ground. Rich backstory builds excitement for what is to come, and the live experience lives up to pre-game expectations. Professionally produced movie-like cut scenes seamlessly merge with live video as the heist is underway, truly giving the sense that the remote team is directing an action film. With shocking twists and a heart pounding climax, Casino Mortale is a sure bet!

Neverland: Heist on the High Seas
(Kingston, Ontario, Canada)
Neverland: Heist on the High Seas brings the world of Peter Pan to life in a refreshingly unique storyworld. Beautifully detailed scenic immediately immerses Captain Hook’s prisoners in the iconic Jolly Roger. With a little help from Tinkerbell herself, captives will overtake the ship in an attempt to “set a course for the second star to the right and head straight on ‘til morning!” The incredibly impressive scenic and storyworld is only enhanced by the game’s original, outside the box puzzle flow. Neverland: Heist on the High Seas sailed to the top of the list and is a must-see game for families, Peter Pan fans, escape game enthusiasts, young, old… well, you get the point.
Our full review of Neverland: Heist on the High Seas will be posting soon.
Cabin in the Woods
Escape World
(Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
Remote play escape games are more than just the brick and mortar product brought to the internet. They are in a way a theatrical show that must captivate the audience in an immersive and engaging manner. Few games have managed to do this quite as well as Cabin in the Woods at Escape World. Instantly bringing viewers into the storyworld, the experience is framed as a paranormal investigation live stream led by the affable Psychic Ricky. Turns out he not actually psychic – it’s just a family name. That leaves the viewers in the challenging position of helping him escape a potentially haunted cabin, with grave consequences (for Ricky, of course) if they are unsuccessful. The undeniably fun storyworld and remote play presentation is supported by immersive scenic and a completely intuitive and clever puzzle track. We’ve been stuck in our fair share of creepy cabins, but this Cabin in the Woods stands tall as a top International Remote Play game!

Congratulations to our winners of the first ever Keys To Greatness – Best Remote Play – International award!
With more than 1,000 games played across the site, being picked as one of the best three in the country is a well-earned honor to truly be proud of!
With so many deserving games worthy of recognition, our goal is to ensure these Keys To Greatness awards are attainable to all – not just those with blockbuster budgets that might be otherwise out of reach. As such, it’s important to note that we have, as much as possible, limited games to winning a single category – but every game will still be qualified to win the coveted Keys to Greatness – Best Game award, as well as the Keys to Greatness – Remote Play awards.
*Although the games I’ve personally designed are consistently very highly rated by both enthusiasts and newer players alike, I cannot in good conscience nominate an attraction I created. As such, those games and the venues that call them home have been intentionally omitted from consideration for any Keys To Greatness award.
